Yes, that's part of the problem.  If the federal police don't care about the return date, the airlines might.  Well, I went with the safe route and booked a 90-day trip.  Once married, I will go register with the federals, begin my application for permanencia, then change my airline ticket (or maybe cancel it).  It's the way it really should be done.

Yeah, I'm pretty honest.  :)

This is not actually the case Sven, it's true I can stay legally in Brasil for six months, but that's only if policia federal approves my stay. Initially I can only stay 90 days with possible extension for additional 90 days. The whole problem arises because I need to file in request at Policia Federal for extension. There's also a chance it might not be approved, slim chance since they didn't care last time, but nevertheless possible.

Sorry, Nikki I must be a bit daft since I don't quite understand what you mean. Is it likely that airline will give me hard time and won't let me board the plane. Becuase if that the case this will be disaster in which case I will loose the whole plane ticket.
Other problem is that If I purchase a ticket most likely I will receive e-ticket where I will just receive this reference number that I show at check-in along with my passport.
Let's say for example I book I flight with TAM from London to Sao Paulo Is it likely they will not allow to board because I've got e-ticket with return date six months out? Last time I flew this and the passport was all I needed. It sounds a bit to risky to me, I don't want to end up spending 800 quid for nothing.

When I returned to Brazil (from am abortive visa trip!) in January I bought a return ticket online that would allow me to stay until the end of my 180 allowed days, however at the airline check-in desk at Gatwick they would not let me board until I changed the return date (cost me £100 at the airline desk in the airport) to 90 days ahead. I explained that I intended to extend my "tourist" visa (as a UK citizen I didn't need a physical visa) at the Policia Federal, but despite conversations with numerous higher officials they would not budge.
Could be worth checking with the relevant consulate about this rather than relying on hearsay - probably find there is no official line on this but I just got a "jobsworth" at the check-in!

About two weeks ago I've called TAM office at Heathrow and asked them about the very same scenario you've just described. I was being told I will not be allowed to board a plane on 6 months return ticket. I also tried to explain to them that I intend to apply for extension, but they will still deny you to board a plane because your application could be rejected by policia federal.

This is just as I suspected.  I thought the Brazilian federal police would example the length of stay at the time I enter the country, too.  I knew the airlines would check, though.  This is why I made my trip for 89 days.  American and TAM airlines staff both cautioned me that I could get in trouble if my flight is delayed, etc. and I end up there longer than 90 days.

Before that happens, I will already have begun my application for permanencia with my Brazilian wife.  I'm OK past the 90 days as long as I've begun the permanencia process, right?

I have a similar problem. I intend to travel to Brazil and if I like it there will extend and stay for the 90 days. But after the 90 days I want to travel north east to Peru and possibly Ecuador via land. So I only want a Single airfare ticket into Brazil from London as I will be returning home from another country, and as I do not know when that will be I will book the ticket whist away.

What do you think I should do? Should I just buy a single ticket and tell immigration in Brazil about my travel out of Brazil through land?

You won't get to Brazil. It's the airline that wants verification that you will be leaving.

If I had a single ticket into Brazil and a ticket three months later from Brazil to Peru this should be enough right?

I bought tickets through Avianca that left Brasil 6 months after I arrived and went from New York to São Paulo to Colombia, I was never questioned by anyone in the airport, airline or immigration.
