Well, this site is fantastic for me as it has such much information and resources that I really need to know.

Without boring you, just a little bit about me. I fell in love with the country of Brasil some years ago when on holiday and since then have had his dream to live there.

So that is what I will be doing in January 2011. Travelling all the way from Rio to Maranhao to look for my tropical paradise and then find a place to live. The two major obstacles I have is that my portuguese is little to non existent and I find it really hard to know. The other obstacle I have is that I don't know anyone there or have an friends. So it makes it a bit hard.

But in true adventure spirit, I am determined to go through with it and live the dream that I have always wanted. I am lucky in one way that I sold a business some years ago so am in the fortunate position where I don;t need to find work in Brasil. I still have to do many thing to allow this dream to happen.
Well, it is a pleasure for me to meet everyone here on the forum and I hope I get to know you well.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to join the forum and hopefully I can contribute something Big%20smile

Muito Obrigado

Tchau

Adrian

Bem-vindo Adrian.
The 2 obstacles you mentioned - not yet knowing portuguese and not knowing people in Brasil - go hand in hand.  Best thing you can do is get onto the portuguese!!

And yes, it IS very fortunate if you don't need to worry about earning money.

Boa sorte com tudo (good luck with all).

Welcome to the Forum! Where in Oz will you be coming from? and do you have HSBC over there because I can't remember if you do or not.
I was right in the middle of a f***ing reptile zoo, and somebody was giving booze to these goddamn things. Won't be long now before they tear us to shreds.

Adrian, another thing it might not hurt to do just to maybe make some Brasilian contacts, even if the lack of portuguese could make some things a bit difficult there, is to get yourself onto orkut - www. orkut.com.br

In case you don't already know, a little like Facebook (without some of the extra fluff)..Facebook definitely growing in Brasil, but orkut still I think more used).  Orkut "communities" for discussion etc, include some specifically for Brasil-Australia, and in some of them they speak mostly English.

Also, depending on where you are in Aus, you might be able to hook up with some Brasilians here.  A lot of them (mostly students) in the major cities.

All excellent ideas Ange. I will be sure to do that and look at opening an Orkut account. Thanks for your suggestions and the use of your brain power. Muito obrigado Smile

Do you get many regulars on this forum or is it many travellers with random questions?

Thanks Daniel, as you have HSBC in Oz then I would highly recommend you try and opened up a premier account with them before your move OceanSpirit - trying to opened a bank account is very hard work but if you already have a premier account with HSBC back in Oz it will make you life much more straight forward when that day comes where you have have to walk throw that bank door and face the BANKERS....lol

sorry for responding to questions directed at OS. here in Australia you need a real bundle of cash to open a premier HSBC account... it's something like $100,000 (plus) Australian dollars. (and "," isn't a decimal point )

I looked into it last year. Cause the banks are not offiliated as I think they should be, they only offer or wave the a $2 service fee or something (not more than 1-2 bucks) if you have a basic HSBC account.

Well the only reason I brought it up was because he has just sold his company and might have the kind of cash around - I think its worth doing as they can open his account over here in a matter of days.
Also he shall be able to use the global view option to transfer funds from Oz to Brazil with no hassle what so ever. NO other bank in the world gives you that facility.
