Hi Folks,
My mother-in-laws computer suffered terminal damage, probably caused by a power surge. Does anyone know what a power surge protector is called in Portuguese, my wife has never heard of one.
Cheers all.

Most everyone with a desktop PC uses a Estabilizador here where I am. That is the word you are looking for. A Nobreak (UPS - uninterpretable power supply) is one step up and a little more expensive. I had trouble getting a power scheme that didn't cycle a lot and make a lot of scary noises. I went from a nobreak to estabilizador but this was all I could find 127v, which is the standard here. In retrospect I think that having a good ground (earth) matters with these devices.
Best Luck!!! |

Go for the "No Break" if you can afford it.
The scary noises is when a "No Break" kicks in and actually does it's job which of course is unheard of in Brazil except for the tax guys

If the computer is connected to the internet by the telephone (land) line (either dial-up or ADSL) chances are that a lightning strike (even quite far away) enters the computer by that way and destroys the modem or even the motherboard.
You can buy a seperate "filter" (surge protecter) te be mounted on the telephone outlet, or buy a no-break with a telephone socket which is protected agains surges.
Safest way is to disconnect the wires if not in use, and when you hear a thunderstorm coming.
