    Posted: 19 July 2010 at 15:52
I am now getting x-rayed on a regular basis since I have large luggage. Never a problem and never paid a multa since I love to bring in books and second hand clothes, new running shoes, sandals, cooking ware, etc.

On the most recent entry the agent actually asked me to show her the laptop. She noticed it was new and asked me how much I paid for it and if I had a nota fiscal.  I told her I paid 700 dollars and that I had no receipt.  That got her snarling that I would have to pay a multa.  I told her it was for uso pessoal, and that I was taking it back to the States with me.

She was also eager to tax a Cuisinart icecream maker, Costco price, 60 bucks.  I told her "e para uso pessoal. Gosto de sorvete, vou fazer e comer na minha casa." That got her even more confused.LOL

She went to see her boss, and came back telling me I could leave but I should register the laptop with the Receita upon exit to avoid future problems.  Her boss, a nice young fellow came bye to ask me if I had any questions.  He helped me declare a 24 inch monitor a few months ago, and he asked me "E para uso pessoal?" Sim..."Pode ir."  Nice guy.

So be firm and insist "uso pessoal."Wink

Right, but what is the difference?
I believe non-residents are allowed one laptop, perhaps two cameras and other objects valued up to 500 dollars.

On the next trip I will bring a 32 inch LED  hdtv from Costco at 350 dollars.

My Brazilian Samsung 19 inch CRT TV died after four years of use.

I will bring the receipt and I am sure the PF lady will throw a fit.LOL

Uso pessoal!!

Perhaps she thought I was a resident due to my fluent Portuguese, although I told her right away que "pode examinar tudo, pois nao tenho nada para esconder"

Non- residents are allowed to bring in goods only to the same value as residents if those goods are destined to remain in Brazil.  That limit is $500.  However, if they are personal goods that are destined to leave Brazil when the non-resident leaves then the limit is $3000 for goods that are not declared on arrival.  There is no limit for goods that are declared on arrival under a temporary import license.

So if I were a resident the PF lady would have slapped me with the 50% above the 500 dollar amount? Ouch!!OuchCry  Now I get all the talk about new residents bringing in a container tax free!!

Yes, but you would also be liable for tax if you were a non-resident but intending to leave the goods over $500 here in Brazil (gifting to a friend etc).

I am a citizen in the Us and Brazil and NEVER PAID ANYTHING AT ALL.

I took 3 computers in different times, even statues, nothing, paintings, new clothing with tags and all, never not one single person stopped me.

what are you guys doing or wearing that you got picked?  Confused

you don't have to have a nota fiscal de compra for the computer.  I declared once that I paid 2k for a laptop from Apple, and nothing, no problem.
